What is Civil Services Preliminary Examination?

The Civil Services Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the three-tier examination process for recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and other central government services. It is a two-stage examination, with Stage I consisting of objective-type papers on General Studies and Stage II being a subjective-type paper on Aptitude Test. The Prelims is a screening exam and only those who clear the cut off marks in each section as well as the overall aggregate are allowed to appear for the Mains exam.

IAS Syllabus:

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is responsible for conducting the Civil Services Examination (CSE) every year. The CSE is a three-stage examination consisting of the Preliminary Examination ( also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT), the Main Examination, and the Interview. The Preliminary Examination is a multiple-choice objective test consisting of two papers. Paper I is General Studies and Paper II is CSAT. Candidates who obtain minimum qualifying marks in both the papers are shortlisted for the Main Examination. The Main Examination consists of nine papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature and the remaining seven are for merit ranking. The interview is conducted for those candidates who have qualified in the written examination.

The UPSC syllabus for Preliminary Examination covers a wide range of topics from various disciplines such as History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Environment, etc. Paper II of Preliminary Examination tests candidates' aptitude and analytical skills. The UPSC syllabus for Main Examination is vast and covers almost all aspects of human knowledge. It includes subjects like History, Geography, Economics, Indian Constitution, Polity, Sociology, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.
