UPSC Exam Pattern

The UPSC exam pattern is divided into three parts – the Preliminary Exam, the Mains Exam, and the Interview.

The Preliminary Exam is a two-hour written exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. The topics covered in this exam are general studies, aptitude, and mental ability.

The Mains Exam is a nine-hour written exam consisting of nine papers. The papers are grouped into two sections – compulsory and optional. The compulsory papers are general studies (paper I to IV), aptitude (paper V), and English (paper VI). The optional papers can be chosen from a list of over 20 subjects.
